How much does a retaining wall cost in Melbourne? (2026 prices per square metre)

Real installed prices for concrete sleeper, timber sleeper and segmental block retaining walls in Melbourne's south-east, with what changes the price and what permits cost.

If you've Googled "retaining wall cost Melbourne" you'll have seen a wide spread, from $150 per linear metre at the low end up to $1,200 at the high end. That's because retaining walls aren't a single product. Materials, height, soil, drainage and engineering all swing the number. Here's what 2026 prices actually look like for residential walls in Melbourne's south-east.

Quick answer

Most residential retaining walls in our area land between $350 and $650 per square metre of wall face, installed, with proper drainage included. A 10 metre long wall that's 1 metre high is 10m² of wall face, so the same wall typically quotes $3,500 to $6,500. Treated timber sits at the low end. Concrete sleeper and segmental block sit at the top.

What you're actually paying for

Most people focus on the material cost (the sleepers, the blocks) but that's only about a third of the total. The rest is in the work that holds it up:

Cost component Share of total
Excavation and footings 20 to 25%
Posts set in concrete 15 to 20%
Sleepers or blocks (materials) 25 to 35%
Drainage (ag pipe, 20mm aggregate, geofabric) 10 to 15%
Backfill, levelling, site cleanup 10 to 15%
Engineering and permit (walls over 1m) 5 to 10%

Skipping the drainage layer is where walls fail. Hydrostatic pressure behind a 1m wall on Casey clay can lean it within 18 months. We build drainage into every job, which is why our quotes look a bit higher than a Gumtree handyman's. They also last 50 years.

What it costs per material

Treated H4 timber sleeper walls: $300 to $500/m² of wall face

  • Galvanised steel or concrete posts at 1.8m centres
  • 200x75x2400 H4 treated pine sleepers
  • 20 to 25 year life
  • Cheapest upfront, softer natural look

Concrete sleeper walls: $400 to $600/m² of wall face

  • Same galvanised post setup
  • 200x75x2400 concrete sleepers
  • 50+ year life
  • Most popular for new builds in Clyde North and Officer estates

Segmental concrete block walls (Heron, Tasman, Boral): $450 to $700/m² of wall face

  • No posts needed (interlocking system)
  • 50+ year life
  • Curves and tiers are possible
  • Most common for feature walls in Berwick garden beds

Rendered besser block walls: $500 to $800/m² of wall face

  • Engineered reo and core fill
  • Rendered finish to match the house
  • 60+ year life
  • Used where the wall is a visible architectural element

What changes the price

  1. Height. Anything over 1m needs engineered drawings and council approval (usually $800 to $2,500 for the engineering plus permit fees). Walls over 1m also need bigger posts, deeper footings and more concrete. Each extra 200mm of height adds roughly 8 to 15% per square metre.
  2. Soil type. Casey clay holds water and exerts more pressure, so we go deeper on footings and oversize the drainage. Sandy soils elsewhere need less. Our area is mostly clay.
  3. Access. If we can get a mini excavator and a ute to the work area, you pay the standard rate. If everything has to wheelbarrow through a 900mm side gate, add 15 to 25%.
  4. Length. Per-metre rates drop on longer walls. A 4m wall costs more per metre than a 20m wall because mobilisation, setup and cleanup get spread across more work.
  5. Backfill and finishing. Replacing topsoil and re-levelling the higher side is included in most quotes. Adding new turf on top of the cut, or a path along the base, is extra.

Permits and engineering

Walls under 1m in finished height generally don't need a council permit in Victoria, but every council has its own quirks. In the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire (where we work most) the trigger is the finished retained height, not the wall height including coping. A 950mm wall with a 100mm cap might count as 1.05m and trip the permit threshold. We measure on site and flag it before we quote.

For walls over 1m the typical path is:

  1. We do an on-site measure and rough quote
  2. Engineer drafts plans ($800 to $1,800 for a residential wall)
  3. We lodge the permit with council ($300 to $600 fee, depending on shire)
  4. Build proceeds 4 to 8 weeks after lodgement

If you're in a new-build estate with covenants (Eliston, Five Farms, Arcadia, Lakeside) the design committee usually wants to approve the wall too. We've done enough of these to know what each committee asks for.
