Sir Walter vs Eureka Kikuyu, which turf is better for Melbourne?

If you're laying a new lawn in Melbourne's south-east, the choice usually comes down to Sir Walter Buffalo or Eureka Kikuyu. They're the two most popular varieties for a reason and they suit very different yards. Here's the comparison based on installing both for the last decade across Pakenham, Berwick, Clyde North and Officer.

- Sir Walter Buffalo is the better all-rounder for Melbourne homes. Shade tolerant, soft underfoot, drought hardy once established. We recommend it for around 70% of jobs.
- Eureka Kikuyu is the better pick for high-wear, full-sun yards (think kids and a dog) where shade isn't a factor and you want fast recovery from damage.

Sun and shade
This is the deciding factor more often than any other.
Sir Walter Buffalo tolerates 4 to 5 hours of direct sun a day. That means it works under a single mature tree, beside a north-facing fence, or on the south side of a single-storey home. It's the only soft-leaf buffalo with this level of shade tolerance.
Eureka Kikuyu wants 6+ hours of direct sun. In shade it thins out and dies back within 12 months. If your front yard faces south, or any part of your backyard sits in shade for half the day, Kikuyu is the wrong call.
Most Melbourne south-east blocks have a mix of full sun and partial shade, which is why Sir Walter wins more often.
Wear and recovery
Eureka Kikuyu is the toughest soft lawn variety on the Australian market. It's the most-used variety for footy ovals, golf course tees and high-traffic public lawns. If you've got two young kids, a Labrador and a backyard cricket setup, Kikuyu will outlast Sir Walter by a margin.
Sir Walter is no slouch. It handles normal family wear fine. It just doesn't recover from heavy damage as fast. A patch worn to dirt by a dog will take Sir Walter 6 to 8 weeks to fill in. Kikuyu fills the same patch in 3 to 4 weeks.
Drought and watering
Both varieties are drought tolerant once established (about 12 months in). Sir Walter has a slight edge because of its deeper root system, but both will survive a Melbourne summer with watering once a week through December, January and February.
In year one (establishment phase) both need:
- Daily watering for the first 14 days
- Every second day from week 3 to week 6
- Twice a week through the first summer
- Then transition to once a week or as needed
This is the same for any turf you lay. Skipping the establishment watering is the most common reason new lawns fail.
Mowing and maintenance
Sir Walter: mow every 10 to 14 days in growing season, every 3 to 4 weeks in winter. Keep blade height around 40 to 50mm. One fertilise in spring, one in autumn. That's it.
Eureka Kikuyu: mow every 7 to 10 days in growing season, every 2 weeks in winter. Keep blade height 25 to 40mm (lower than buffalo). Two fertilises per year minimum, sometimes three. Edges need trimming more often because Kikuyu sends out stolons aggressively (the runners grow into garden beds).
If lower maintenance is the priority, Sir Walter wins comfortably.
Winter colour
Both varieties go semi-dormant in Melbourne winter. Sir Walter stays a deeper green for longer. Kikuyu browns off harder when night temps drop below 5°C.
Neither needs winter overseeding in Melbourne's climate. If a year-round perfect green lawn is a non-negotiable, neither variety will do it on its own. Tall Fescue (a cool-season variety) stays greener through winter but burns in summer. There's no Melbourne lawn that's perfect year-round without effort.

Sir Walter is roughly 15 to 25% more installed because the supply price is higher. The actual install labour is the same.
What we recommend by suburb
This is rough but accurate based on the yards we see:
- Clyde North new builds: Sir Walter. Most yards have at least one shaded zone, and the soft buffalo leaf works on bare feet.
- Officer growth corridor: Sir Walter for shaded blocks, Kikuyu for full-sun yards with kids and pets.
- Pakenham larger blocks: usually Sir Walter, occasionally Kikuyu for the back lawn if it's a wide open block.
- Berwick established homes: almost always Sir Walter. Mature trees create shade and Sir Walter handles it.
Other varieties worth knowing
- Couch (Wintergreen, Plateau): cheaper than Kikuyu, finer leaf, very wear-tolerant but no shade tolerance and goes very brown in winter. Niche pick.
- Tall Fescue: cool-season, stays greener in winter, struggles in Melbourne summer. We rarely recommend it.
- Zoysia: low maintenance, slow grower, expensive. Worth considering for low-traffic feature lawns.
